“Abundant Possibilities”

Judges 4:1-7
Matthew 25:14-30

Dear Members & Friends of Vista La Mesa Christian Church,

Our lesson from the Hebrew scriptures is from the time of Judges 4:1-7 when Deborah is not only the judge over all Israel, she also is the prophet and commander in chief of the military. Women in leadership for God is nothing NEW.
In Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus is teaching the Parable of the Talents, where one is given five, another two, and one is given one. This will be our last Sunday together. Please come to hear the Good News of “Abundant Possibilities.”

VISTA LA MESA CHRISTIAN CHURCH CALLS

REV. REBECCA LITTLEJOHN AS PASTOR

At a specially called Board meeting, August 28 the Search Committee unanimously recommended their candidate to the Board. One week later at a special congregational meeting following church, the Board unanimously proposed Rev. Rebecca Littlejohn’s name to be voted upon. The congregation also voted unanimously to call Rev. Littlejohn to serve as the new called pastor of Vista La Mesa Christian church.

Chair of the Search Committee, Dick Penny, reports that a contract was sent to her in

Alabama and has now been received back here with the proper signatures. Rev. Littlejohn

has now resigned her position and is making plans to move to California as soon as her

obligations and responsibilities are fulfilled at First Christian Church, Anniston, AL.

Her husband, Todd, will be arriving with their truck packed with boxes and begin

looking for their new home shortly. Rebecca’s mother visited her last week to help begin

the packing process. Her first day in the office will be November 15. And it’s not possible

to tell who is the happiest with these wonderful new plans: the minister with the new

congregation or the congregation with the new minister. There is real enthusiasm and

sincere thankfulness to God for the successful outcome to the year and a half it has taken to

arrive at this Good News. Well done, Search Committee, Board and Congregation.

“Our Mission: Wisdom”

Joshua 24:1-3a, 14-25
Matthew 25:1-13

Dear Members & Friends of Vista La Mesa Christian Church,

   In the final chapter of Joshua he says to the people, “ ... choose this day whom you will serve;
... but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
We are also almost finished with our study of Matthew, and Jesus teaches a strange parable
of Ten bridesmaids five foolish, five wise. We will be studying Our Mission: Wisdom. In what
ways have we, as Gods people, drifted away from the values of the reign of God (or the kingdom of heaven)?

“Temptations of Pride & Place”

Joshua 3:7-17
Matthew 23:1-13

Dear Members & Friends of Vista La Mesa Christian Church,

This Sundays message deals with the subject of hypocrisy. Perhaps Jesus’ strongest inditement was agaainst the leaders who preached one thing but practiced another, “You hypocrites!” As we read Christs’ denouncement in his own day, how do we apply his principles with in our own congregation?
For he teaches “All who exalt themselves will be humbled and all who humble themselves will be exalted.”
What questions and temptations of pride and place call us away from Jesus’ own example of genuine humility, love & justice?

“What is Jesus Teaching?”

Deuteronomy 34:1-12
Matthew 22:34-46

Dear Members & Friends of Vista La Mesa Christian Church,

In the final chapter of Deuteronomy Moses last acts and his death are recorded. Here, once again, a Pharisee, a lawyer, proposes a question to test Jesus. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” Please come to worship as we see how The Teacher turns the tables with his own question to the Pharisees that day. How can David call the Messiah his LORD and still be David’s son? What is Jesus teaching?
