Outreach

As a congregation, the people of VLMCC are committed to serving God’s people, here in our community and around the world. Here are the primary outreach programs we support on a regular basis.

  • We hold in a monthly homeless outreach ministry, called Welcome Saturday.  We provide a hot breakfast, showers, toiletries, clothing, and a lunch to go for our neighbors in need.  This program occurs on the 2nd Saturday of each month. If you would like to volunteer or donate items in support, please contact the Pastor.
  • We are a host church for the East County Branch of the Interfaith Rotating Shelter Network, which means we house 12 or so folks for two weeks each year, providing sleeping quarters and three meals a day, with the help of folks from a few other congregations. We began this ministry as a support congregation in 1989, and have served as a host congregation since 2002.
  • We have a monthly food drive, which supports the food pantry at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church.
  • At Christmas time, we adopt several families from the El Nido shelter for women and children, and fulfill their Christmas wish lists.
  • In collaboration with the Faith Coalition of La Mesa, we mobilize against racism and anti-LGBTQ hate in our local community, as specific issues arise.
  • We are a Global Missions Church, which means we do our best to stay connected to the rest of the world, primarily through our denominational Global Ministries. We lift up our Global Ministries Prayer Partner each week in worship.
  • Each year, we participate in special offerings for Week of Compassion, our denominational relief, refugee, and development mission fund; and for Reconciliation Ministry, our denominational effort to combat racism. We use these offerings as opportunities to educate ourselves about the issues they address.
  • In an effort to live out our values, we serve fair trade coffee every Sunday after worship.
  • We share Christ’s welcome with our community by providing space for multiple Gamblers Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, along with other community groups. You can see the meeting schedule on our monthly calendar.

We are always looking for new ways to get involved in our community and beyond.  If you are interested in becoming involved in these or other outreach projects, we would love talk with you!  Come by and visit and see what exciting things we can do when we work together.
